Winter Portrait - Nonfiction/Digital/Short Film
An indigenous Mapuche couple revisits their wedding video during a rainy winter afternoon.
Director's Statement:
Winter Portrait is a brief moment in the life of my aunt and uncle, Mireya and Emardo, the first Mapuche couple to get married with a civil ceremony held in their indigenous language: the Mapudungun. Set during a rainy afternoon, this piece explores moments of indigenous joy and calmness embedded in the quotidian, as well as the importance of identity preservation for a group that is often marginalized by Chilean society. With this film, I oppose the narratives of violence and conflict that mainstream media uses to talk about the Mapuche, and instead I choose to contribute to the generation of an imagery of peace for the territory.
